We have sovereign crises on both sides of the Atlantic: both major global economic contributors stalling at the same time is far more serious than just one failing. But in both cases I’m optimistic. We have learnt the lesson from Lehman; you don’t let something systemically important fail without adequate preparations. The Greek bailout package – which is essentially a selective default – is an example: it is a default but it is not massive and is highly controlled and well organised.
