The Nordic custody market is facing deep change
The Nordic economies weathered the financial storms of recent years better than most, certainly compared to the emerging Baltic region, where growth rates were decimated. This remains a wealthy corner of Europe but one that has seen great change in terms of market infrastructure and regulation. This is not likely to go away as the region grapples with the challenges posed by a European landscape still in flux.
Regional integration, and the creation of a pan-Nordic trade and post-trade environment, has been a clear theme of recent years in this northern European zone. But there are some that still question to what extent these efforts have been successful. Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark remain distinct markets, joined together in certain areas, but not others; and similarly with the rest of Europe.
