BBVA, the Spanish banking group, has made a strategic decision to leave its comfort zone of the Latin American markets, in a bid to become a global banking group. To date, the group has focused on the business opportunities available through its extensive distribution network in Spain and Latin America. But, says Juan Pablo Jimeno, managing director of BBVA’s global asset management division, BBVA is now turning its focus on the global, institutional market. “We want to build a global asset management company and to compete for global institutional business.” BBVA has hired a new global head of institutional business and plans to boost staff numbers by 15% this year.
