The conference season is over – three conferences in three months, and isf was there to check them out. Here is a round-up of the Clearstream, RMA and IMN European Beneficial Owners conference events – three out of the five biggest securities finance conferences of the period.

Clearstream's annual Global Securities Finance (GSF) conferences are hailed by the repo community as conferences that deliver on two fronts – providing contentious panels with good debate on the one hand, and good networking opportunities on the other.

The 11th conference, held in Luxembourg this year, did not disappoint, and one of the highlights was the presence of Mu Huaipeng, director-general of the financial market department at the People's Bank of China (PBC), who gave a presentation and fielded questions about the Chinese market and its progression towards securities finance.

Mu Huaipeng has much to shout about. Since 1997, when China's commercial banks exited the stock exchange market to form the inter-bank OTC bond market, repo has become the Chinese bond market's primary trading instrument. And with $2.02 trillion (Rmb15.88 trillion) in transactions during 2005, and $2.85 trillion (Rmb22.4 trillion) in 2006 up to October, China has the largest repo market...
