Over the past few years, securities lending and margin use have moved from being a hidden aspect of the financial services world to being front page news in the press. This change has been both positive and negative, depending on the story, but has often focused on unattractive aspects of the business. Unfortunately, many of the details of these stories have not always been accurate.
While bad press is frustrating for those engaging in bona fide business, stories that get the facts wrong are the most harmful to the industry as a whole. One way to alleviate this issue is to promote transparency.
