?PASLA has a new man behind the wheel. Lawrence Komo was named chairman of PASLA at its annual conference earlier this year. He speaks to Craig MacDonald about his plans for the association, why he took the job, and his take on what happened at Opes Prime.

Isf: Why did you take the PASLA job?
Lawrence Komo: I wanted to support the growth of these emerging markets, and when you speak from a PASLA platform, your voice takes on a new weight. In my experience, the regulators listen to PASLA more than the individual securities finance firms.
Isf: You were named chairman at the PASLA conference in Sydney. What do you make of the Opes Prime situation?
LK: The situation attracted a lot of national attention by the Australian press. As a result of the media coverage, some lenders have pulled out of securities lending. Opes Prime has left a sour taste in some people's mouths and has raised concerns over the legitimacy of the business. It just shows that even in a developed market like Australia, which knows how our business works, you can still have these kinds of reactions.
